Innocence Lost

October 21, 2026

I believe that God created each of us a certain way, for a certain reason. We were never meant to be exactly alike. Some of us were created to see the world differently, to feel things more deeply, and to question things that others simply accept.

But sometimes, being different comes with a price.

Some people spend their entire lives being misunderstood. Not necessarily because there is something wrong with them, but because the people around them cannot understand the way they think, the way they feel, or the way they see the world.

I know this because I am one of those people.

For as long as I can remember, I have always felt different.

Growing up, I never really fit in. At school, people thought I was strange. Because of my size and appearance, most people simply left me alone. But what they didn’t realize was that behind that exterior was someone who desperately wanted to be understood.

Making friends was never easy for me. Connecting with people seemed to come naturally to others, but for me, it was always a struggle.

Throughout my life, whenever I tried to open myself up to someone, one of two things usually happened. Either they couldn’t understand me, or the depth of what I carried inside frightened them away.

And after experiencing that enough times, something changes inside a person.

You begin to build walls.

You create a world of your own, somewhere you can retreat when the outside world becomes too difficult to understand. A place where nobody can judge you, reject you, or hurt you.

That is what I did.

I created a world within myself where I could feel safe.

Some of this comes from experiences in my past, from wounds and traumas that I am not ready to speak about just yet. Perhaps one day I will find the words to share those parts of my story.

But tonight, I want to speak about something else.

The loneliness of a soul that has spent a lifetime searching for a connection it has never truly found.

There are moments in life when I feel an overwhelming longing for something I cannot fully explain.

It is not simply loneliness.

It is something much deeper.

It is the feeling that somewhere inside me, there is an empty space that nothing in this world has ever been able to fill.

And sometimes I find myself wondering what life is really worth if we go through it without ever experiencing that deep connection that makes us feel complete.

For most of my life, I believed that somewhere out there was another person who would understand me. Someone who could look beyond my appearance, beyond my personality, beyond the walls I had built, and see the person I truly am.

Perhaps we call that person a soulmate.

Perhaps it is simply someone whose soul recognizes our own.

Whatever we choose to call it, I spent much of my life believing that finding that person would finally bring peace to the part of me that has always felt incomplete.

But as the years have passed, I have come to realize something painful.

Not everyone finds the connection they spend their life searching for.

And perhaps the greatest sadness is not simply being alone, but living in a world surrounded by people who have forgotten how to truly connect.

I look around today, and sometimes I barely recognize the world we live in.

Everything has become so fast, so superficial, and so consumed by things that have very little meaning.

We are constantly connected through technology, yet somehow we have become more disconnected from one another.

We spend hours looking at our phones, watching other people’s lives, comparing ourselves to strangers, chasing approval, attention, and recognition.

We want what others have.

We admire what others possess.

We measure success by money, power, influence, and material possessions.

But how often do we stop and ask ourselves whether any of these things actually make us happy?

How often do we sit quietly with our own thoughts?

How often do we look into another person’s eyes and genuinely try to understand what they are carrying inside?

I believe we have lost something precious.

We have lost much of the simplicity that once made life beautiful.

And from my perspective as a man of faith, I cannot help but wonder how much of this is part of the enemy’s plan.

Because I believe the devil does not always need to destroy us through obvious evil.

Sometimes all he needs to do is distract us.

Keep us busy.

Keep us chasing things.

Keep us comparing ourselves to others.

Keep us so overwhelmed by the noise of the world that we no longer hear the quiet voice of God or recognize the needs of the people standing right in front of us.

And perhaps that is one of the greatest tragedies of our time.

We have learned how to communicate with the entire world, but we are slowly forgetting how to connect with another human soul.

I say these things not because I believe I am better than anyone else.

Quite the opposite.

I say them because I have spent much of my life searching for the very things I am speaking about.

And I want to make something very clear.

I have experienced what this world has to offer.

I have had money.

I have experienced power.

I have known influence.

I have possessed material things that many people spend their entire lives working to obtain.

I have experienced the kind of success that society tells us should make a person happy.

And yet, none of it filled the emptiness inside me.

None of it brought the kind of happiness I was searching for.

None of it gave me lasting peace.

Because at the end of the day, you can have everything this world considers valuable and still go home feeling completely alone.

You can surround yourself with beautiful things and still feel that something essential is missing.

And perhaps that sensitivity, as painful as it can sometimes be, is not a weakness.

You can have people admire you without having a single person who truly understands you.

And that is a kind of poverty that money cannot fix.

Tonight, as I sit here reflecting on my life, I feel that familiar longing again.

That quiet scream somewhere deep within my soul.

A longing to be understood.

A longing to connect.

A longing to experience something genuine in a world where so much feels artificial.

And tonight, for reasons I cannot fully explain, I feel these things more deeply than usual.

But I also realize that this reflection is not only about me.

It is about the countless people walking through this world carrying feelings they cannot explain.

This is for the girl who lost her innocence too early.

The girl whose trust was broken, whose childhood was taken from her in ways nobody should ever experience. The girl who learned to hide her pain behind a smile because she believed nobody would understand.

This is for the boy who feels completely lost.

The boy who doesn’t know where he belongs, who feels rejected, misunderstood, or forgotten. The boy who desperately wants someone to notice that beneath his silence, he is hurting.

This is for the person standing at a crossroads in life, uncertain which direction to take.

For the person who wakes up every morning wondering whether the road ahead will ever lead somewhere meaningful.

This is for those who are still searching but cannot even explain what they are searching for.

For those who have everything but feel empty.

For those who have nothing but still hold on to hope.

For those who have loved deeply and been disappointed.

For those who have built walls around their hearts because opening up one more time feels too painful.

And for those who lie awake at night, surrounded by silence, wondering whether anyone in this world truly understands them.

I want you to know something.

Being misunderstood does not mean your life has no meaning.

Being different does not mean you were created incorrectly.

And being unable to find the connection you long for does not mean you are incapable of love or unworthy of receiving it.

Perhaps some of us simply experience life differently.

Perhaps we notice things others overlook.

Perhaps we feel the suffering of this world more intensely because our hearts have never learned how to become indifferent.

Perhaps it is part of the way God created us.

I am still learning to understand that myself.

I do not have all the answers.

I cannot pretend that faith has erased every moment of loneliness or answered every question I have carried throughout my life.

There are still nights when I struggle.

There are still moments when I wonder why certain things happened to me, why certain people entered my life only to leave, and why finding genuine connection has always seemed so difficult.

But through all of it, I continue to believe that God does not create people without purpose.

And perhaps the emptiness we sometimes experience is also an invitation to look beyond what this world promises us.

Perhaps we were never meant to find our entire sense of completeness in another human being.

Perhaps love, companionship, and connection are beautiful gifts, but they were never intended to replace our relationship with God.

I am beginning to understand that peace cannot depend entirely on whether another person chooses to understand me.

That does not mean I have stopped longing for love or connection.

I haven’t.

And I don’t believe I ever will.

But I am learning that my life must have meaning even in the absence of the things I have spent so many years searching for.

Tonight, my heart feels heavy.

Not only because of my own experiences, but because I see so many people losing themselves in a world that constantly tells them they need more.

More money.

More attention.

More possessions.

More approval.

When perhaps what we truly need is much simpler.

A little more compassion.

A little more understanding.

A little more honesty.

A little more time for one another.

And a little more room for God in our lives.

I miss the simplicity of a world where people seemed to value these things more.

I miss the idea that happiness could be found in a conversation, a sincere embrace, a quiet evening, or simply knowing that someone genuinely cared.

Maybe those things still exist.

I want to believe they do.

And perhaps that is why, despite everything I have experienced, I have never completely stopped searching.

Because somewhere deep inside me, beneath the disappointments, beneath the walls, and beneath the memories I still carry, there remains a part of me that believes genuine love and human connection are possible.

And I refuse to believe that the world has become so cold that there is no longer a place for people who feel deeply.

So tonight, I leave these words for anyone who recognizes a part of themselves in my story.

Do not allow the world to convince you that your value is measured by what you own, how much money you make, or how many people admire you.

Do not lose your ability to feel simply because others have forgotten how.

Do not become cold just because the world has treated you coldly.

And above all, do not forget that you were created by God for a reason, even if that reason is not yet clear to you.

As for me, I am still walking my own road.

Still carrying questions.

Still trying to understand myself.

Still hoping that one day I will experience the kind of connection my soul has longed for all these years.

But I am also learning that my story is not finished simply because certain chapters have been painful.

There is still meaning to discover.

There is still love to give.

There is still faith to hold on to.

And there is still a God who sees the parts of us that the rest of the world may never understand.

Maybe, in the end, the greatest peace comes not from finally being understood by everyone, but from knowing that even when the world does not understand us, God does.

And tonight, that is what I choose to hold on to.

A Prayer for Those Who Are Still Searching

Heavenly Father,

Tonight, I come before You with a heart that is heavy, but still full of faith.

Lord, You know me better than anyone ever could. You know my past, my struggles, my disappointments, and the wounds I carry silently. You know the things I have never spoken about and the feelings I have never been able to explain.

Father, I ask You to bring peace to my restless soul. Help me understand that even when the world cannot understand me, You do. Even when I feel alone, You are near. And even when I cannot see the purpose behind my suffering, remind me that my life still has meaning.

Lord, tonight I pray not only for myself, but for every lost soul walking through this world.

For the child whose innocence was taken too soon, bring healing.

For the young man who feels lost and forgotten, bring direction.

For the woman who cries herself to sleep, bring comfort.

For the person who has everything but feels empty inside, reveal what truly matters.

And for those who are searching for love, acceptance, understanding, and a place to belong, remind them that they have never been forgotten by You.

Father, open our eyes to what this world has made us blind to. Teach us to love again, to care again, to listen without judgment, and to see beyond appearances.

Help us recognize that the greatest treasures in life cannot be purchased with money, gained through power, or measured by success.

And Lord, if there is one thing I ask for myself tonight, it is this:

Please do not allow the disappointments of my past to turn my heart cold. Do not allow loneliness to destroy my ability to love. And do not allow the cruelty of this world to take away the compassion You placed inside me.

If the connection my soul has searched for all these years is still somewhere ahead of me, give me patience.

And if that connection never comes in the way I imagined, give me the strength to find peace in You.

Above all, Father, help me become the person You created me to be, not the person this world expects me to become.

Because when my journey on this earth finally comes to an end, I do not want to be remembered for what I owned, what I accomplished, or how much influence I had.

I want to know that I loved, that I cared, that I remained faithful, and that somewhere along the way, my life made a difference in someone else’s darkness.

And tonight, Lord, for every soul that feels misunderstood, unwanted, forgotten, or alone, I ask that You remind them of one simple truth:

Even when the world fails to see us, You never stop looking after us.

In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray.

Amen.

Written from the heart of a soul that is still searching, still feeling, and still believing.
