What if the reason so many people struggle to find true love is that we’re looking for the right things in the wrong order?
We live in a society where physical appearance, money, and social status often determine who gets our attention. We’re attracted to someone’s beautiful face, attractive body, successful career, or financial stability. But are these really the qualities that build a lasting relationship?
Psychology teaches us that physical attraction can create an initial connection, but a healthy, lasting relationship requires much more. Trust, emotional security, respect, communication, and commitment all play important roles in relationship satisfaction.
The problem isn’t necessarily what we’re looking for. It’s the order in which we’re looking for it.
I believe there are five important qualities we should consider when choosing someone to share our lives with.
1. GODLINESS — THE FOUNDATION OF LOVE
The first and most important quality is someone’s relationship with God. Not simply someone who claims to believe in God or attends church, but someone whose faith is reflected in their everyday actions.
A genuine relationship with God should encourage humility, patience, kindness, forgiveness, and selflessness.
First Corinthians 13:4–7 reminds us that love is patient, love is kind, and love is not self-seeking.
Someone who truly understands God’s love should recognize that loving another person isn’t just about receiving. It’s also about giving, sacrificing, understanding, and wanting what’s best for someone else.
Faith doesn’t make a person perfect. What matters is whether their relationship with God motivates them to recognize their mistakes, take responsibility, and continue growing.
2. CHARACTER — WHO SOMEONE REALLY IS
Character reveals what physical appearance and financial success cannot.
How does someone treat their family? How do they respond when they’re angry? How do they treat people who cannot offer them anything in return?
A person’s character becomes especially important during difficult moments.
Someone can be attractive, wealthy, and educated but still lack honesty, compassion, patience, or emotional maturity.
Our past experiences, upbringing, and emotional struggles can influence our behavior. However, what matters is whether we’re willing to recognize unhealthy patterns and work toward becoming better people.
True character is demonstrated through actions, especially when life becomes difficult.
3. INTELLIGENCE — THE ABILITY TO LEARN AND GROW
Intelligence isn’t simply about education, degrees, or academic achievements.
It’s about wisdom, understanding, emotional awareness, and the willingness to learn.
Someone who continues growing intellectually and emotionally is better equipped to make thoughtful decisions, solve problems, communicate effectively, and adapt to life’s challenges.
Proverbs 4:7 emphasizes the importance of wisdom and understanding.
Look for someone who is willing to learn, listen, acknowledge mistakes, and grow alongside you.
4. MONEY — FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY, NOT WEALTH
Money is important. Financial stability can provide security, reduce stress, and create opportunities.
But money cannot guarantee happiness, faithfulness, kindness, or genuine love.
A person with significant wealth may lack the qualities necessary for a healthy relationship, while someone with modest financial resources may possess extraordinary character.
Instead of focusing entirely on how much someone earns, consider their work ethic, financial responsibility, ambition, and willingness to build a future together.
Financial circumstances can change, but strong values and responsible habits can help a couple navigate those changes.
5. PHYSICAL APPEARANCE — ATTRACTION IS NOT THE FOUNDATION
Physical attraction is natural and important.
There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be attracted to the person you love.
However, physical appearance changes with age, health, and life’s circumstances.
If a relationship is built primarily on appearance, what happens when that appearance changes?
First Samuel 16:7 reminds us that people often focus on outward appearance, while God looks at the heart.
Beauty may capture someone’s attention, but character, commitment, and genuine love are what help sustain a relationship.
THE PSYCHOLOGY BEHIND LASTING LOVE
Research in relationship psychology highlights the importance of feeling understood, appreciated, supported, and emotionally connected to a partner.
Physical attraction may bring two people together, but attraction alone cannot sustain a healthy relationship.
Emotional maturity, trust, respect, and the ability to work through disagreements contribute to long-term relationship satisfaction.
This doesn’t mean that every relationship following these five priorities will succeed. Relationships require effort from both people, and shared values, communication, and mutual commitment remain essential.
But choosing someone based on deeper qualities rather than superficial attractions can help us make wiser decisions.
FINAL THOUGHT — CHANGE WHAT YOU LOOK FOR, AND YOU MAY CHANGE THE LOVE YOU FIND
Maybe the problem isn’t that true love is impossible to find.
Maybe we’ve become so focused on what someone looks like, what they own, or what they can provide that we’ve forgotten to ask who they truly are.
Don’t just look for someone who makes your heart beat faster.
Look for someone who respects you, understands you, encourages your growth, and stands beside you when life becomes difficult.
Look for someone whose faith is reflected in their actions, whose character earns your trust, and whose love brings peace rather than constant uncertainty.
Because true love isn’t simply about finding someone who meets your expectations.
It’s about finding someone with whom you can build a meaningful relationship based on faith, respect, understanding, and genuine commitment.
Don’t let your eyes choose someone your heart will eventually struggle to live with.
Look beyond appearance. Look beyond money. Look beyond status.
Look for God. Look for character. Look for wisdom.
Because the person you choose to love can influence the direction of your entire life.
